My lazy butt kicked that 5K a$$

**disclaimer: I posted that on facebook (with the whole a-butt word).  I’m not trying to offend someone with my language, but boy was I on a runners high Saturday night!**

Last fall I got it in my head that I wanted to run a 5K.  I’m not really sure why, maybe reading all the blog posts about all the amazing girls who were doing it, I was inspired, I’m not sure but I wanted to do it.  Hubby and I started training for it, but then winter kicked in and I became a hibernating bear.

It was on my 101 in 1001 list of things to accomplish and a goal that I wanted to complete before I turned 30 next month.  I found a race in Joplin that was a night race, The Starry Night 5K, 10K and One Mile Fun Run, told hubby and he signed me up before I had a chance to back out.

Being Father’s Day weekend we wanted to celebrate Father’s Day with my mom before she left at 7am Sunday for China, so we decided to go out to eat on Saturday night.  Mom suggested that we eat Italian (my fave) for the carbs to run so we ate dinner at 4pm.

As we were headed to Joplin a storm started blowing through and of course we were driving right into it.

Then I got the warning that there was a Flash Flood Warning.  Fun!  I may have started grumbling about having to run in this and started getting cold feet about running in the first place.

We met up with mom and dad at Carino’s.  One of my favorite things there is the Chicken Parm but I couldn’t eat it all.  Hubby went with fish.  By the time we left it was pouring rain and we stood in the corridor of the building for a while hoping it would slow down.

This is the only picture of the rain I got, but the streets of Joplin were flooded in a lot of places.

Because of the rain, check in was delayed to start until 7pm.  We got there right about 7 and it had quit raining.  That meant, in fact, we probably were going to be running.  Hubby and I went up to get our packets and check in.

I am proud to say I finished the race.  My dad keeps teasing me that I cheated and had someone pick me up, etc.  Just so you know, I didn’t!

Our official time was 42:27.58.  That made our pace a 13:42 min/mile.

Hubby was a bit ahead of me and waited at the last turn for me to catch up.  I guess everyone kept telling him he didn’t have much more to go and encouraging him to finish but he told them he wanted to cross the finish line with his wife.

Hubby finished 26 out of 27 in his age group.  I came in 45 out of 62 in my age group.  Over all we came in 248/249 out of a total of 290 5K runners.  For our first 5K we were proud of ourselves.  Estimated that we ran about 2 miles of the 3.2 miles that make up a 5K.  That’s extremely good for non-runners like ourselves.

Initially I asked mom and dad to stand with Tbug at the finish line for us, however I told them not to worry about it with the rain so we went to their house after we were finished to pick up Tbug.  As we were driving home, I really wanted ice cream but didn’t say anything until hubby brought it up so we went by Sonic and got 1/2 price shakes.  Hubby and Tbug got Peanut Butter and Chocolate and I got a Chocolate Covered Strawberry shake.

Then we came home and sat in the hot tub to help with our muscles.  I’d say a pretty great end to a fantastic day.  Plus I crossed off a 30 before 30 list, a bucket list and a 101 in 1001 item.

Scuba Diving & Dinner – What more could you ask for?!?!

Saweeeeet!  Yup, no reason for saying that, just really felt like it :).  So last Tuesday night, the 12th, was another Try it Tuesday for Scuba Diving.  I have to say, I felt a lot more comfortable and took full advantage over the last time!

We made arrangements where Tbug got to go with us to try it as well.  To say she was nervous is a bit of an understatement governor!  (said in my best British voice, but I have no idea why).

We get different sized tanks for different sized people.  There were a few other kiddo’s that beat us there and to the punch so Tbug had to wait her turn.  No biggie though, she swam around with the other kids for a while.  Then once it was her turn, we suited her up (although we didn’t actually put a suit on her, we put the tank and goggles and fins etc).  They gave her instructions and then her daddy and I tried to walk her through this.

Sadly though, if you’ve ever worked with your own kids, sometimes they won’t listen to you, I’m not sure why though.  So we had D the man step in and walk her through it.  That’s what she needed.  Look at her go!

Once she got more comfortable D the Man let her go at her own speed and we had to go finding her :).  haha.

TB was at it again as well.  Look at him go.

I think eventually that TB, Tbug & ZebraGirl were playing hide and seek or something.  haha.

Well Read Individual

I love to read.  The imagination of it all is great.  Sadly, sometimes I feel like I just don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done that I want and still get sleep.  So when I read about bloggers who go through 100 books a year, etc, plus they’re married, have a job, etc etc etc, I just am in shock and awe as to how they do it all!  I struggled it felt like getting through 10 books for this challenge.  Part of my problem is I have quite a few books I’ve started, just not finished.  Apparently patience or ADD or something kicked in and no I don’t have ADD although I sometimes think that everyone has a very mild case because people are so easily distracted.  I dunno…. I’m no expert by any means!  Anyway, Here are the 10 books that I read cover to cover and considered for my 101 list.  One more thing to check off.  yehaw!  They were all good reads and brought different things to the table, although there is a definite pattern between cooking and photography, don’t you think 🙂

Book’s read for the 101 List:

1.  The Pioneer Woman Cooks Cookbook: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl
October 2010 (yes I read it cover to cover)

2.  The Everygirl’s Guide to Life by Maria Menounos
April 2011

Throw your camera in the water…

…And see how people react 🙂  Disclaimer! Only do that if you have a waterproof camera!!

Anyway… Tuesday night hubby and I got the opportunity to do something wild and CRAZY :). haha.

We got the opportunity to “Try it Tuesday” also known as scuba diving in a heated swimming pool.  Earl’s sister and brother in law are certified scuba divers and through different means, we all got invited to go try out scuba diving.

Not going to lie, I always kind of wanted to learn to Scuba Dive and I even put it on my 101 in 1001 list.  Yup, I sure was confident, wasn’t I?  lol.

And those aren’t called Flippers, Flipper is a dolphin, they are called fins, just so you know.  And fins are extremely hard to walk in!  Then add the weight of the air tank and I about fell over 4 times until I got the weight distribution thing figured out.

They had to try 3 different pair of fins on me before they gave up and gave me adjustable ones.

T beat us in the water.  Now being 8 he can’t become certified yet, however he can scuba dive in a swimming pool with an instructor present.  You bet he was all over that and he had a blast.  Of course he’s always been a fish, you should see him when he comes over to our pool in the summer.  He’s going to have a long year and a half wait time to turn 10.

Now Pokey doesn’t like water in his face.  Earl wasn’t quite sure if Pokey would like it, but Pokey is also one, let him do it at his own pace and he’ll even get underwater in our pool.  He was doing sooo good.  In fact, Earl said he didn’t like water especially in his eyes and they got him to take his mask off, under water, put it back on and blow the water out.

oh Hai, Yup, that’s hubby and me.  The pool water was a bit on the murky side, not sure why.

They wanted us to swim down along the bottom.  At first I couldn’t get off the top portion of the water so they put a 2lb weight in my vest and that helped me.  Then I was scraping my knees on the bottom and could actually sit on the bottom.  Earl didn’t have any problem getting down there, in fact she put some air in her vest (so not the right technical name) so she wouldn’t worry about scraping her knees.

It’s Pokey and Earl 🙂

I tried smiling with all my might but those goggles refused to let me.  And they aren’t goggles either… goggles are what someone wear (I forget what they told me).  This is a mask.

It was a busy night and luckily we got there early.  Once we were done, they took our tanks/masks/fins and gave them to other people to try out.  We went and sat in the lovely hot tub to chilax.

And then the gator tried to get us… or is it a croc?

Hey again.  Ignore the makeup running down my face and the hair all over the place, k?

T wanted to get back in so he went on the hunt for fins to fit him.  He’s learning that I’ll stalk him until I get a picture. ha!

And Moo even got in on the action and is becoming a fish.  Can’t wait to see what this summer brings for her in the pool!

I may yet get to cross a task off the list of becoming scuba certified… we’ll see.  I’ll let you know 🙂

We're a Team

And together we can conqueror all things!

And that has nothing really to do other than, I popped into my head and I had to share!

Ok so it’s been a realllllly long time since I’ve updated my 101 list.  But I’ve actually mastered a few things.  Life has been so super busy crazy, especially right now with Finals week coming up next week.  In fact I have my Lab final tonight.  OMG wish me luck, I’m so going to need it.

Anyway back to the subject at hand:  The 101 List.

26) Make a homemade berry pie from fresh picked berries

Isn’t it beautiful???

this was prebaked, but oh so yummy!

49) Learn to can my own vegetables

We have mastered both our Pressure Canner we got as a wedding present as well as how to freeze them!

52) Keep our house picked up for one month

My husband is the absolute best!  He cleaned the house for us one day and it’s been clean since.  We’ve had a few just small random cleaning sessions like the day I moved the furniture and swept under them and we re-arranged, but otherwise, my husband is awesome! The cleaning streak hit him and he went to town!

62) Go berry picking

It helps that we have a Cherry tree in our yard!  But last year we had a late freeze and it killed all the cherries, apples, pears & grapes, so this was the first year since we moved in we were able to pick berries off the tree!

99) Make all recipes in the Pioneer Woman’s Cookbook (24/64)

I’m not anywhere close to being done here, but I’ve made a few more recipes.

100) Do a yearly post wedding Scrapbook page (highlighting the years events)

I actually changed this up a bit.  I’m now making a “memories” book which is different than a scrapbook.  At our wedding shower I received a book.  My friend Nancy had everyone write comments for a good marriage in it.  I’ve now gone back and added photos to this book, memories, quotes, songs, etc that mean something to us.

Army Quilt

I’m fairly certain I’ve shared with you the quilts I made a few years ago, I just can’t seem to find the post right now.

So anyway, if you didn’t know I made quilts once upon a time, I made 2.  Well, I have material to make my hubby one that’ll be super cute, but I also stole some of his old military uniforms that he doesn’t wear anymore.  He had a few that he wanted to keep intact, otherwise, I got the rest and decided to make him an army quilt.  I don’t have a pattern, I’m just winging it.

In our house, we found a cutting mat so I told him for Christmas I wanted the squares and the running circular knife to cut material with.  Please don’t ask me technical names because I don’t know them.

And then you need material, or in my case, old army uniforms.  A guy I work with did this for his boss to give her brother in law (you know a friend of a friend of a friend of a cousin twice removed. ha!) and I saw the finished product, so I knew I had to make hubby one.

I bought these scissors specifically for cutting material.  But I get teased because the night I brought them home I said, “These scissors are only for cutting.”  Yeah, I haven’t lived that down yet.  {Listen here mister, this is for you, I’m just sayin}

But I love this b/c you use the circular blade, run it around the square and BAM {Thanks Emeril} you have uniform squares which are MUCH easier to sew together.

I’m not very far unfortunately because sometimes time is limited, but I just wanted to show you what I’ve been working on…. I can’t wait to show you the finished product!

In more ways than one!  This week seemed to take a while, but not as bad as last week… but this Friday post is more so focusing on our Last Friday (last day) in Hawaii which was September 9.  Now as you know, Hawaii is 5 hours behind Missouri time so by the time we got home it was 9 am Saturday Morning, Missouri time, and boy was my internal clock ever messed up, but more on that in a bit.

This was our view on Friday morning.  And even with the long day from the night before, we were still awake at 6:30 am.  So we got up and went out exploring our new part of the city.

Good Eats!!!

So let’s start knocking the restaurants off the 101 in 1001 list…

1.  Risky’s Steakhouse located in Old Ft. Worth at the Stockyards.  OMG you want an excellent steak… definitely go show this place some Love!!!!! (November 26th, 2010)

2.  Instant Karma Gourmet Hot Dogs located in Downtown Joplin, MO.  Ok so I actually had plans that night so all I had were their cheese fries and a bite of the husband’s Hotdog.  I really wasn’t impressed with either, but I may have to go back and try again, just for good measures. (February 12, 2011)

3.  A&Q Chicken House located in Fayetteville, AR.  They also have a location in Springdale, AR, but we were at the VA hospital for my husband and the one in Fayetteville is just down the road from the VA Hospital.  You want good chicken, this is the place to get it!  I had Chicken Quesadilla’s and my husband had a Chicken Sampler Platter that had pan fried, Over the coals & BBQ.  The Over the Coals was the absolute best!  Oh My Goodness!  And then top that with their excellent rolls.  You’ll think you died and went to Chicken Heaven! (February 15, 2011)
