Happy First Day of Fall {a scarf & some randomness}

1.  So I participated in a Scarf swap again this year with The Tichenor Family.  My scarf swap partner was the lovely sweet Sarah from Words from the Heart.  Go check her out and give her some blog lovin!!  And Sarah, Thank you again for the lovely scarf!!

Sorry for the iPhone pic, and I didn’t have a mirror either, so arm length away it is!

2.  Does anyone else feel like this week was dragging?  Last week it was like, Is it Wednesday already, this week I hit Wednesday and i was like, really?  2 more days this week until the weekend…  I know, way to go from the glass is half full to the glass is half empty.

3.  I drink lots of water, but to break up the sameness, I drink Crystal light packets in it.  Well over the weekend I came across Sugar Free Hawaiian Punch Packets.  Remember that stuff from being a kid or those of you who feed it to your kids?  Well I compared the labels and it’s basically just the same so I got some to try.  I absolutely LOVE the Polar Blast.

4.  So a new random fact from Nutrition class…. Did you know that your small intestine is 10 feet long?  But apparently the surface area that you actually use to digest food is 25 feet long.

5.  Another funny random fact, on our test that is next Wednesday night, any question with liver as a possible choice, that is the answer, but only on Chapter 3 test.  And question #10, the answer is C.  Yes I know this…. but you may be asking yourself how….. She told us 🙂

6.  So I work in the Risk Management department at our company.  After the tornado hit, one day we were sitting here discussing different “Worker’s Comp” issues and here was an interesting fact.  Yes, I like facts so I wrote it down.  Yes I’m weird, I’ve learned to live with it! 🙂
Worker’s Comp:
~There is an “Act of God” clause that if something happens (ie lightning strike, tornado, etc) your companies worker’s comp department doesn’t have to cover that.
~The difference there though, Wal-Mart for Example, if you are trained in Saving skills and have to help the customers to wherever, for example a tornado hits and you have to rush them to shelter before you can get yourself there b/c you are trained for that, you are at “more risk” and therefore Worker’s Comp will fall in to place.
~If your company maintains your parking lot and you slip and fall on ice on your way to lunch, that is a Worker’s Comp claim because the parking lot is employer maintained even though you are on your time.

7.  So I heard this funny quote the other day… I don’t know where, but again, I wrote it down 🙂

Steak is the breakfast of Champions
The lunch of kings
The dinner of Industrial Barons
AND
The dessert of the T. Rex

8.  Now see, isn’t your day more enlightened?

9.  I took a break from my Hawaii recap today if you couldn’t tell but I’ll be back up and running next week.  I’m hoping to create a little slide show of one set of photos, we’ll see how that goes. If you’d like to get caught up please click on these links.

10.  Happy Weekend!

Dole – Let’s Talk Pineapples

While we were at the Dole Plantation, we got to sit in and watch a pineapple selection/cutting demonstration.  Now I like pineapple and fresh is always better, however, I learned a few things and I thought it might be fun to share.

Selection
1.  Smell – you don’t want them to have a real strong pineapple smell.  The more pineapple smell you get, the more the fruit is actually fermenting.

**This is extremely picture heavy and long.  I’m sorry, I was just trying not to have to break it out as much…**

Monday was a LONG day.

We boarded the bus at around 7:30 in the morning and didn’t get back to our hotel room until about 11:30 pm.  I hate to say it but the driver of the bus drove me nuts with his bad grammar and his constant snorting and swallowing INTO the microphone which was turned up way loud.  I think I found my Tourettes I didn’t know I had… lol j/k… I think.

Being the last “official” day of summer as people refer to Labor Day as the roads were busy swamped with people trying to get to the beach.  Our tour was through the Polynesian Culture Center who I learned was owned by BYU – Hawaii or at least all the BYU students worked there to help with tuition to attend BYU – Hawaii.

We started our day with a tour of Hawaii and were supposed to get back to the Culture center around noonish but because of traffic didn’t get there until just a bit after 2.

Homemade Waffle Batter

Hey what is this?

Why it looks like a new waffle Iron.

It smells like a new waffle iron.

Oh ouch, it burns like a new waffle iron, don’t touch it 😉

Consensus says, it’s a new Waffle Iron.

I have been wanting a waffle iron for a while now.  But some days I guess I’m cheap.  Cheap not easy as I say and my {step}daughter points out every chance she gets, even when it doesn’t apply.  Note to self, teach her what that really means… I’m frugal!

Anyway moving on.  I really wanted a waffle iron but couldn’t see spending $50+ on something I really wouldn’t use THAT much… But a while back I was at JC Penney and they had a coupon, spend $25 get $10 off.  Then on top of that they had a waffle iron (this one hint hint) for $69.99 on sale for $29.99.  Add my $10 coupon to that, I got a $70 waffle iron for $21 and change after tax.  SCORE!  See, my frugalness paid off!

So then I was surfing around reading blogs, I have a lot of food blogs I have a tendency to read, and one of them posted this Homemade Waffle Batter.  Bad thing is, I can’t remember which blog I was reading, so if you read my piece of the blog-o-sphere, and this is your recipe, please let me know so I can credit you!  Until that happens, know I didn’t make up this recipe, but dadgum is it ever so good!

Update!!  I found where I found the recipe, found Here!  Thank you Pinterest!

I didn’t want to be traveling on our anniversary!  That was one request I made.

Oh and trust me, your time will be so screwed up!  I woke up all but 1 morning at 3 am which was 8 am at home.  I’d have to convince myself to go back to sleep until about 6-6:30 am HI time which was 11-11:30 am MO time.  And we wouldn’t go to bed until around 10 pm-12 am HI time which is 3-5 am MO time.  Oh well, it was like college all over again, going to bed late, getting up early. ha!

When I got up at 6:25ish this was the sight I saw out my balcony.  I was in love.

Good Eats!!!

So let’s start knocking the restaurants off the 101 in 1001 list…

1.  Risky’s Steakhouse located in Old Ft. Worth at the Stockyards.  OMG you want an excellent steak… definitely go show this place some Love!!!!! (November 26th, 2010)

2.  Instant Karma Gourmet Hot Dogs located in Downtown Joplin, MO.  Ok so I actually had plans that night so all I had were their cheese fries and a bite of the husband’s Hotdog.  I really wasn’t impressed with either, but I may have to go back and try again, just for good measures. (February 12, 2011)

3.  A&Q Chicken House located in Fayetteville, AR.  They also have a location in Springdale, AR, but we were at the VA hospital for my husband and the one in Fayetteville is just down the road from the VA Hospital.  You want good chicken, this is the place to get it!  I had Chicken Quesadilla’s and my husband had a Chicken Sampler Platter that had pan fried, Over the coals & BBQ.  The Over the Coals was the absolute best!  Oh My Goodness!  And then top that with their excellent rolls.  You’ll think you died and went to Chicken Heaven! (February 15, 2011)
