William Faulkner’s House – Rowan Oak

I’m sure you’ve heard over the course of this semester I’ve talked about my William Faulkner Class I took (or actually am taking since next week is finals…). Well anyway, there are only 5 students in this class so the teacher was able to load us up in his van and we drove to Oxford, MS to roam around in William Faulkner’s own stomping ground. Our first stop was to William Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak. It was named after two trees that are no longer on the place. The house itself was built in 1844 and stands on 29 acres. Faulkner bought the house in the 1930’s for around $6,000. It was in fairly bad shape but he did most of the repairs himself in the afternoons after he finished writing in the mornings.

These trees were all over the place. How gorgeous are they?!

Once we entered the house we greeted and received an awesome insight into the house. Sadly they have all the rooms blocked off where you can just barely walk in and see things, you can’t actually walk around the room.

This was the Library, just as you entered and to your left.

The Parlor was to the right from the entry hall.

And then this display case was located outside the parlor. Dr. Meats (our professor) was telling us all about the different items that were in the display case.

After you walked through a hallway the dining room was on your right. The door in the back corner of the top photo took you into a room (closed off remember) that housed the only phone in the house and the phone that Faulkner got the call he had won the Nobel Prize. Then there was a hallway that led to the kitchen that was added on during the second remodel in the early 50’s. We weren’t allowed in there either.

The stairs were fascinating and like most southern houses, there were 2 sets of stairs used to get upstairs.

Faulkner’s office was added on during one of the remodels. The house was originally in an L shape. Estelle (his wife) was overseas when he did the second remodel and when she came home he figured that she would paint/wall paper the rooms but she refused. While she was gone he got the idea for a book and wrote it on the actual wall, again planning on it being covered up but she refused and so there it stands.

Here was Faulkner’s typewriter that he typed all of his books out on. This was on display just outside of his office.

Once you went upstairs, Estelle’s room was actually in the back of the house and it was part of the original L shape the house was in, even though it was added on later. To get to the back bedrooms you had to start in the front bedroom (Jill’s, their daughter), go through Faulkner’s bedroom and then you’d get to Estelle’s bedroom.

Sadly Faulkner and his wife Estelle didn’t have the best of relationships. They had been high school sweethearts but her family didn’t approve of him so she married some man who whisked her away to the Philippians. She and that man had 2 kids. Then when she was ready to come home, she left him and moved the children back to her family home in Oxford. William married her, from what we’re told, because he was afraid she might commit suicide. She actually tried while they were on their honeymoon. As the years went by their marriage deteriorated and she offered him a divorce many times. He wouldn’t take her up on this however he also had many mistresses on the side.

This might be the cause/reason that they have separate bedrooms. Faulkner’s room was located between Estelle’s room and Jill’s room.

Jill was the second but only daughter that Faulkner and Estelle had. They had one prior to Jill, Alabama, but she only lived to be 10 days old. Jill’s room is the only room in the entire house that has a radio. Faulkner claimed that he had enough voices in his head, he didn’t need a tv or radio to contribute to that. Jill begged her dad for a radio but he wouldn’t let her have one. Eventually her mother broke down and bought her one.

There was one guest room in the entire house. Faulkner was a very private man so I don’t think they had many guests. Estelle’s son lived with them until he was old enough to move out on his own and no one can really tell me what happened to Estelle’s daughter. She’s never really mentioned.

This was a closet underneath the stairs in the front room where they found a lot of Faulkner’s work. It was funny that Rowan Oak butts up against Ole Miss, however he told Jill that any work of his just send it to the University of Virginia. Jill wound up splitting it between the two universities.

In the olden days before air conditioning in houses, kitchens were actually outdoors in a separate building so that you didn’t heat up the house in the summer. This is the original kitchen. Sadly they don’t allow people in there. Me being who I am would have LOVED to see the kitchen!

This kitchen was one of the additions that was added on to the house. We weren’t allowed in there, just able to peek through windows. But as you can tell, there wasn’t much counter space at all.

They had a nanny who was born a slave into the Falkner family (yes I left the u out because the original Falkner name didn’t have a u, he added that to his pen name) in the 1800’s. She lived to be 100 years old and even after slavery became abolished, she stayed with the Faulkners and raised Jill up until she was 6, that was the time Nanny Caroline Barr passed away (at 100 years old). Faulkner had this house built for Caroline to live in, it was just out back of the kitchen so that she’d have her own privacy.

This is the East and the West side of the house. The west side under the awning is where they parked their car. And this is the little hut thing that Faulkner built for himself.

And there you have it, my tour of Rowan Oak :). Obviously with it sitting on 29 acres there is a lot more but we mainly stuck around the house. It costs $5 a person to get into the house (I think that’s what we paid anyway). There is also the horse barns and a trail that will walk you right up to the middle of the Ole Miss Campus. We didn’t walk the trail. They’ve kept this all in tact but it actually now sits in the middle of town basically.

The Horse Chiropractor

If there’s one thing anyone should know, we take excellent care of our horses (and all the other critters too!!). A few years ago KG to majorly hurt. We took him to a vet down in Oklahoma and a few hundred dollar later he was on the road to recovery. Now, KG is 19 years old so he’s starting to push it in horse years, but that still doesn’t mean we can’t/shouldn’t take care of him!

This week dad made an appointment to take him to a Horse Chiropractor/Acupuncturist to see if maybe that was what was making the old man ache so terribly. Friday night was our appointment so we loaded him up in the trailer and headed to the Vet.

When we got there, dad and hubby unloaded KG. Tbug and I walked off just to the side to stay out of the way and this huge fat cat came to greet us. At one point the cat bit me which made me jump and laugh, apparently we weren’t paying enough attention to him… lol.

If you see the lines on KG right around his ribs, that was the acupuncture point. The vet was drawing all the lines to make sure everything lined up where it belonged.

Comfort Inn, Oxford, MS

So if there’s one thing I love to do, it’s travel. My goal is to go to travel to all 50 states as well as all over the world! But you can only do one little thing at a time.

So here recently my Faulkner class made a trip to Oxford, MS since that is where William Faulkner himself lived. Our class stayed at the Comfort Inn. You can even see my room there from here… I was on the 2nd floor first door from the left.

I swear, King beds will spoil me :). The couch pulled out into a hide-a-bed also.

Week 29

How far along? 29 weeks 6 days

Total weight gain/loss: This number is depressing, just going by the drs scales.

How big is baby? Baby already measures about 15.2 to 16.7 inches long. Right now, she weighs about 2.5 to 3.8 pounds but she’s still got a ways to go — can you believe she’ll triple in weight before birth?

  • She’s getting a little cramped in there, since she’s growing so fast. But you probably already realize that, since you’re getting all those jabs and kicks.
  • She’s growing white fat deposits under her skin, and her energy is surging because of it.
  • Feel a subtle twitch? It might be baby hiccupping.

Maternity Clothes? I’m going to ask again, why haven’t I taken this out because other than the mesh shorts I have, those are the only non-maternity things I wear. Well that and hubby’s sweatshirt and his tshirts.

Stretch Marks? Oh holy cow!

Best moment this week?We got to hear the heartbeat again yesterday! Woohooo. 140 beats per minute. We also bought her a 4th of July outfit. I found some last week that I really liked but for the price and not knowing exactly if she’d be here or not, I couldn’t bring myself to buy them. What I got her yesterday might not be nearly as cute, but price wise was worth it since we don’t know exactly if she’ll be here or not. We’ve had a due date from June 26 all the way to July 4th and back again….

Movement? I think she’s taking up kickboxing in there…

Food Cravings/Aversions? Other than nothing really sounds good these days, no not really. Well not other than that bacon dip mix stuff and I haven’t tried steak in a while.

What I miss: I realized earlier this week that I don’t remember what it was like to have a flat belly. I mean I didn’t have a “flat” belly but compared to now it was and I could even suck it in. I also miss my belt buckle… oddly enough. Hmmm…. I also miss NOT crying over the weirdest things. I live 12 miles from my parents house and I cried for 12 miles home the other day and then once I got home I cried for another like 20 minutes. Things just kept building upon themselves and it sucked.

What I’m looking forward to: Once baby comes, getting to lay on my belly again, does that count? I saw this picture on facebook the other day and cracked up laughing because this is totally how I sleep.

If you want to know what I bleeped out I’ll tell you but it was a little vulgar for this blog.

Nausea/Vomiting? eh, we’re doing fairly decent here.

Labor signs? Well not that I know of….

Gender? We have had them verify it’s a girl 3 different times. Think it’s a girl?!?!

Belly Button in or out? I’ve told you many times this is a very sore subject. I’ve noticed when Peanut bumps up against it (with some part of her) it sticks out and then my shirt rubs it and that aches.

Wedding rings on or off? The rings that hubby bought me so I didn’t feel bad are too big. Most days I think I could wear mine but I don’t want to have them cut off for some reason so I’ve put them away for safe keeping.

Sleep? Most every day I woke up this week I felt like I had been run over by a Mack truck. Peterbuilt if that’s what you prefer, I’m not picky 🙂 (Think of Cars, Mack Hey Mack. Mack I ain’t no Mack, I’m a Peterbuilt) 🙂

Weekly Wisdom: So I kind of quit counting the weeks that I’ve had this “fun” cough. It’s gotten a lot better but it’s still around. The nurse told me yesterday that I’m pregnant. I laughed my butt off at that comment. Then she’s like, what I mean is your immune system is down a bit. I still couldn’t help but laugh so just so we all know, I am in fact pregnant.

Due Date: Thursday June 26, 2014 was what we originally thought. Then I was told June 30, then July 4th, then June 26, then June 27 and after the 3-D ultra sound June 28. I guess she’ll come when she’s ready, right?

Don't Freak Out!! It's Still Me!!!

So when I started this blogging journey I didn’t even know what a blog was. As I’ve stated many times before, some guy that I went to college with started one and I thought what the heck, let’s check it out. So originally my name was Nicole J. Real creative right? Hey I didn’t know what a blog was.

Then slowly but surely I started slowly figuring out what it was all about…

So I got brave one day and changed my blogging name to That’s Life. I’m not sure why I did it or why I picked that title, I sure wish I did though, it would be fun to track the changes but sadly that was around 2010 and I can’t quite remember that far back, but anyway I chose That’s Life as the blog title name. Here is even one of my headers that was on the bloggity blog :).

Then eventually I started worrying about the negative connotation that had. That’s Life. Well I say that quite a bit, and I don’t mean it negative but it could very easily be taken negative at that so one day I started pondering a name change and wound up with Life’s a Beach.

Life’s a Beach came from the fact that my husband answers the phone that way sometimes, “Life’s a Beach wish I was on one.” Seriously who doesn’t wish they were on a beach, I guess those who prefer the mountains and snow? But anyway that’s where my blog made its home… Life’s a Beach.

So about a year ago or so, maybe a tad bit longer I really wanted to go the .com route so we started looking in to it. Well I learned that Life’s a Beach .com is a realty company out in California so that name was out. Shoot! Heck I even had to start an email address at lifesabeachtheblog which I wasn’t real keen on the idea of having The Blog attached to the end of it.

So I just continued on and would ponder names every now and again. I wanted something that really represented me but what about me could I represent? I pondered using my name in the title and I pondered this and I pondered that. So a couple weeks ago when we were driving up the East side of Arkansas and across the southern part of Missouri to come home from Memphis I finally came up with a new name.

I can’t remember who was driving at the time, but the other person started looking into the name Midwesternatheart.com. (I think I was driving because I don’t remember looking up the name….) The name just so happened to be available.

I went ahead and sat on it a little bit and this week we finally bit the bullet and decided to start the switch over to my blog being called Midwestern At Heart and it will be at www.midwesternatheart.com.

I’ve had a few people catch on the subtle changes, because I haven’t even changed my header yet (I need to find time to create one) or my button, etc but if you type in tnicolej.blogspot.com which was my previous address it reroutes you to www.midwesternatheart.com.

It will also show up on the tab at the top as Midwestern at Heart. I just wanted to point this all out so that you guys didn’t freak out :). The end of school is majorly approaching and I’ve been busy writing papers so it’s a slow process but with the help of my wonderful husband it is coming along. So please bear with us while I give the el bloggy a make over and I love you all to pieces!!!!!

Homewood Suites – Hilton – Memphis, TN

Okay so random thought on my brain right now… I’m hungry. Looking at my food posts like y’all do, is making me hungry. That could be because it is noon and I haven’t eaten since breakfast and baby girl is yelling at me to eat mommy, eat!

Anyway thought I’d pop in and tell you about the accommodations that we had while we stayed in Memphis that one night. Hubby went online and found us a really good deal to stay at the Homewood Suites which is a Hilton property there in Memphis.

Typically they are set up for extended stay visitors so the rooms are set up more like a one-room apartment. Very very nice though! Our room had a fireplace and there was a note on the table that said that you could get one log free for it, from there they could be purchased. The living room had the couch, a chair, a television, and a small table and around the corner was the kitchenette which had a full-sized refrigerator, a stove, cabinets, sink, dishes, and even a dishwasher. Easter 2014

I had a major #bloggerfail for Easter! Holy Cow. We’re talking no pictures hardly at all. Seriously. Can’t really tell you why other than…. um…. we didn’t. I didn’t get pictures of the cake. The cake was good though.

No family pictures. No food pictures. um…. I was a slacker! #bloggerfail

So leading up to Easter (which yes I know the true reason for the day) I posted this picture on my facebook for the fun of it. This just cracks me up. I can’t help it.

I also posted a few jokes because well, here lately I’ve been on a joke posting kick. Again, no reason I just like them 🙂

A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out across the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, but unfortunately the rabbit jumps right in front of the car. The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls over and gets out to see what has become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit is the Easter Bunny, and he is DEAD.

The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry. A beautiful blonde woman driving down the highway sees a man crying on the side of the road and pulls over.

She steps out of the car and asks the man what’s wrong.

“I feel terrible,” ! he explains, “I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny with my car and KILLED HIM.”

The blonde says,”Don’t worry.” She runs to her car and pulls out a spray can. She walks over to the limp, dead Easter Bunny, bends down, and sprays the contents onto him.

The Easter Bunny jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them and hops off down the road. Ten feet away he stops, turns around and waves again, he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves, hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again and again and again and again, until he hops out of sight.

The man is astonished. He runs over to the woman and demands, “What is in that can? What did you spray on the Easter Bunny ?”

The woman turns the can around so that the man can read the label.
It says..

(Are you ready for this?)
(You know you’re gonna be sorry)
(Last chance)
(OK, here it is)

It says, “Hair Spray Restores life to dead hair, and adds permanent wave.”

Happy Easter!!

And the other Easter joke I posted last week was:

How did the soggy rabbit dry himself?

With a hair dryer

We got up early and went to Church and then headed to my parents house. When grandma got there she said that the Easter Bunny had been to her house and had left goodies for all of us. Have you ever had Lindor truffles? They’re awesome. My fave is the red and the blue.

Then mom came through and said the Easter Bunny had stopped at her house too. Boy we must have been bad because the Easter bunny didn’t visit our house. #fail

For Easter Dinner we had Ham, twice baked potato casserole, corn, Grandma’s homemade rolls and strawberry jam, and for dessert we had Tbug’s Strawberry Cake she made.

Then later in the afternoon we went to Sunday Night Dinner and had it potluck style. We took our Potato Casserole! YUM! It was all gone by the end of the meal and I almost didn’t get any. Crazy! And there was Easter.

I hope you all had a fabulous Easter and sadly it seems as the years go by, it is becoming less and less of a celebrated holiday, does anyone else get that feeling?

The Cake Disaster

So here’s a good one for ya….

As you know today is Easter. Well last night Tbug and I decided to make a cake for Easter supper. Let’s just say we had…. fun…..

The cake we decided to make was The Pioneer Woman’s Strawberry Shortcake Cake recipe. All was going well with the actual cake. All the measurements, all the pouring, mixing, etc.  Now let me paint a picture for you….

My laptop was sitting on the stove because well that’s where it wound up. We were working on the counter next to the stove with the mixer. Once the cake was in the oven we cleared off the counter top and then started on the icing. So we dumped the powdered sugar in the mixer, the cream cheese, the butter, the vanilla, then I told Tbug to lower her head, meaning the mixer head and she bowed her head.

Right there I should have known something was about to happen… I mean hardly ever do we cook in the kitchen without something weird happening anyway. So… I cracked up laughing. Then we moved on and I told her the mixer head, lower the mixer head. So she pulls it down and I told her to put it on the lowest setting (which if you don’t know is stir). That’s when it happened…..

We had Powdered sugar EVERYWHERE.

It was in her hair, in my hair, on my house shoes, on the counter top, all over the mixer, my arm, Tbug’s arm, Tbug’s apron, my apron, the stove top, my laptop, it was even in the air so when we were talking we were all tasting powdered sugar. Just imagine a HUGE powdered sugar storm blowing in.

And I’d like to point out that hubby was sitting in the kitchen watching the whole thing and there are absolutely NO pictures what-so-ever. Every time something like this happens when really it would be hilarious to have pictures, there is no camera around. So anyway you just have to use your imagination. I’ll let you know later how the cake tasted… as obviously we haven’t eaten it yet….

Happy Easter!
