Ok y’all, I’m a bone head some days I guess.  Last night I came home and got my workout done, then I was helping hubby gather up the trash when the phone rang.  My dad was calling to say that we had a baby on the ground.  woooohoooooooo!

So I ran into the house and changed out of my workout clothes and put on jeans and we jumped in the pickup and headed to my parents house.  While in the house I grabbed hubby’s camera since I liked the lens that was on it vs the one that was on my camera at that moment.  We loaded up the pooches and took off.  Rio looked soooooo cute with the wind blowing her hair going down the road that I tried to take a picture of it.

Darn, no memory card.  #bloggerfail

So I present to you the newest member of the horse clan via my iPhone.

What time is it?

Have you looked at the clock?

Yeah me either.
Because the clock says it is 6pm but my body is telling me it’s 5pm.
I left work at 5pm which my body and the sun were telling me that I left work early at 4pm at the end of the afternoon.
The sun was up so that must mean it’s morning and I should be heading to work, not home from work however the sun was on the west not the east so that means it is afternoon not morning
I can’t quit yawning so obvioulsy I just woke up but we’re in the evening hours which means that I’ve been up for a good 12 hours.

I get up an hour earlier, go to bed at regular time.
The sun is down when I wake up and the sun is up when I go down, sorta.
Now so that must mean it’s bed time but the sun is still up so that must mean it’s morning or noon or afternoon and I should be at work but when you look at the clock it doesn’t agree so that must mean I should just go to bed and call it a day… er night.
What I’m so inelloquently trying to say is….
Yeah I’m tired!
Sorry!

How are you doing with this time change?

Don't Quote This

So the last few weeks at work I’ve been sitting through Continuous Improvement classes for an office building.  We’re the first round of this because generally they do this type of thing at a manufacturing level.

We’ve been learning about DMAIC, Mission & Vision statements, Team Charters, CPI vs CS (Continuous Improvement Processes vs Cost Saving), PBA (Project Benefit Analysis), Conducting Meetings (And the types of people you’ll run into for meetings),  Lean Manufacturing, 5S (or our case 6S: Safety, Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Sustain), and Value Stream Analysis, etc.

It’s quite entertaining and very informative.  Especially the day we watched a video on making toast.  Yes, it’s true… the guy worked for Toyota and brought his employees off the shop floor to witness making toast and then figure out a way to shorten the production time.  Not going to lie, it was pretty sweet!

So we were challenged with two projects to complete in about 2 weeks time, then we had to get up and present in front of everyone.  One of the teachers kept a quotes list of some of the more comical lines said throughout the day.  I made the list.  I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing though…. I guess you be the judge :).

btw, they aren’t in any order, other than the order of the presenters.

TOP 15 QUOTES
Heard from Nexus course students
During their value stream maps and 6S presentations
“My son is drawn to electrical plugs.”
“I don’t like to clean – I make my husband do it at home.”
“I’m so glad you’re concerned, but I don’t know where the plants went.”
“This is one time I got to really tell my wife what to do.”
“Both of my shredders over-heated.”
“My wife referred to this project as her Day Of Humiliation.”
“It was just classic trash.”
“You can swing your arm all over the place and not worry  about knocking anything over.”
“I still don’t know what’s in that box.”
“All that time during the waiting process, we’re hugging trees.”
“ I live with 4 men and even our dog is a boy.”
“We found floppy disks and VHS tapes from the 70’s and 80’s.” – Nicole(me)
“You might need a tetanus shot before going into that area.”
“We removed a blow torch from the shelf.”
“I found stuff going back to the 90’s even though this room did not exist in the 90’s.”

And just for the fun of it, here are before and after photos of the project I used for my 6S that I presented on.

The KC Farmer’s Market

Have you ever been to a Farmer’s Market?  If you answer no, my answer is GO.  Have you ever been to the Kansas City Farmer’s Market?  If your answer is no, My answer is, darn, because it’s reallllllly cool!

Back in 2011 I went to my first Farmer’s Market and thought it was fabulous… but I’m sorry, the KC City Market (aka farmers market) puts this one to shame.

Last fall we went to Kansas City for a weekend and just stumbled across the City Market trying to find something fun to do.  OMG, best time of my life!

So when we woke up on Saturday morning, a couple weekends ago, with nothing to do, we decided to go to KC and go to the Farmer’s Market.  We jumped on line real fast to make sure they were open during the winter hours, and sure enough they were!  Hot dog.

The spice guy was awesome.

We walked away with:  The spices were generally $1 or $2 per scoop.

Flaxseed

Cilantro

Steak Seasoning

Basil

Applewood Seasoning – apparently no individual photo….

Marjorum

Italian Seasoning

then we came away with bell peppers that were awesome!  6 green peppers for $1, we got 12.  and 4 of the colored bell peppers for $1.  Around here in the stores the green peppers are about 79cents a piece and the colored bell peppers are $1.59+ a piece.

Then we got Elephant Garlic.  OMG, I’ve never seen garlic so large.  In fact when I went to pull it apart I was a little confused. ha!
And 6 sweet onions for $2.
Then the really cool thing about this Farmer’s Market is there are all kinds of stores around as well as quaint little restaurants.  At an Italian Market (where you can get yummy looking sandwiches, so need to try!) we got an extra large (3 Liters) of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, some Arborio Rice (to make Risotto), some Italian Sausage & some fresh Kalamata Olives straight out of the barrel.
I’m not going to lie though, I think what made this even better was that Tbug loved being there with her daddy and me and was asking me how to select produce and then helped pick it out.

Do you Revolt – Week 1

Don’t know what that is?  Don’t worry, check this out.

Revolt Fitness Manifesto from JD on Vimeo.

Lately I’ve been sad about the state of my body.  It’s not the greatest at all by any means :(.  Sad day, right?  My Sunday Night Dinner Crowd has been having a Biggest Loser Contest and my weight has been up and down.  Especially on the up side since I’ve been running on the Elliptical (too cold still to run outside).  Then I got an email asking if I was interested in trying Revolt.  I was like, sure, why not.

So we took measurements and before photos… not sure I’m quite ready to out myself with either of those yet… but I have them and I plan on maybe every week (if I remember) to share if I’m down or up.  How’s that?

So Day one workout. Simple enough.  Focused more on cardio.
Day two – boy I hurt from day one.  Isn’t that a good thing??  So anyway day two was Legs.  After the workout, I think I still feel the burn!
Day three – Was kind of a much needed rest day.  I did hop on my elliptical for a quick one mile even though we were supposed to relax, but I felt like I needed to move at least to stretch my muscles in my legs out.
Day four – back to the cardio from day 1.  It was still enough to get my heart pounding and the planks, oh planks, I loathe you!
Day five – Feel the burn people, feel the burn!

Saturday – Free eating day.  Hello!

Smoky Maple Chicken & Cheese Dip

Rachael Ray’s daytime TV show is on at an hour I can’t catch it.  Thank goodness for DVR’s!  Can I get an amen?!?!  So anyway…. I usually watch them the next day while I’m getting ready for work.  Seems like a good time, right?

A few weeks ago she had Slow Cooker Week.  That could also translate to Crock Pot week… just saying :).  Some of the ideas they had on that week didn’t impress me much, but Sunny Anderson had a recipe for Smoky Maple Chicken & Cheese Dip.  She said she created this based off of a grilled cheese sandwich she made herself.  Ok so I’ve tried the dip, now I’m ready to try the Sandwich, just sayin :).

So I decided to make this for a Sunday Night Dinner.  I did half the recipe, just in case we didn’t like it or there was a small crowd, or whatever, there wouldn’t be much leftover.  Ok I’m just sayin, don’t half it.  It’s that good!  The girls snacked on it while the guys were outside grilling.    Sunny got it right!

Ingredients

  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups beer (your favorite, but try to stay away from specialty flavors)
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 1/4 cup grade A maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup red onion pulp (grated on a rasp or box grater into a liquid measure)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced or grated on a rasp
  • 16 ounces maple-smoked cheddar cheese, shredded or cubed
  • 16 ounces smoked Gouda, shredded or cubed
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 rotisserie chicken, skin removed and very finely chopped (not shredded)
  • Kosher salt and black pepper
  • For the garnish:
  • 8 strips bacon, crisped and crumbled or chopped
  • 4 scallions, thinly sliced on an angle
  • Corn tortilla chips, bagel crisps, crostini, or Melba toast

Yields: 6-8

Preparation

In a slow cooker on low add 1 cup of the beer and all of the liquid smoke, hot sauce, maple syrup, onion pulp, garlic, cheddar, Gouda, cream cheese and chicken.

The hot sauce I used.

Looks good already, right?

Have you ever had real Maple Syrup?  That Aunt Jamima has nothing on this stuff!

Season with a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cook while stirring occasionally until cheese is melted and ingredients combined, about 20 minutes.

Keep on low and stir to combine. If it thickens, add the remaining 1/2 cup of beer and stir.

Garnish and serve. Sprinkle bacon and scallions over the top of the slow cooker, then serve with a selection of chips, crisps, crostini or Melba toast.

Oh yum!  This is definitely staying on my list of favorites!

Sonic Breakfast Review

If you haven’t been to a Sonic or even heard of a Sonic, I must ask you, what rock do you live under?  I mean, that might be mean to say, but if you watch tv or listen to the radio, you’ve probably definitely heard the annoying sonic commercial guys.

Anyway, Saturday morning, we decided to head to Kansas City for the day.  On our way headed north, it was breakfast time so we decided to stop in at the Sonic in Lamar and get breakfast.

The cool thing is their menu is served all day… but don’t worry, we went for Breakfast food this time.

Tbug went with the CroisSonic Breakfast Sandwich with bacon

CroisSONIC Breakfast Sandwich
Fluffy egg and melted American cheese on a soft, buttery* croissant with your choice of savory sausage or crispy bacon.
*Contains natural and artificial butter flavors.

Minsky’s Pizza Cafe & Bar – City Market – Kansas City

So while we were on our spur of the moment trip to Kansas City on Saturday we decided that maybe, just maybe we should eat somewhere.  Our first stop of the day was at the City Market (aka the Farmer’s Market).  Once we were done wandering around it was about 12:30 or 12:45.  We had dinner reservations for 5:30, so we didn’t want to eat lunch to late.

Hubby said that we could leave and drive somewhere, but where we weren’t sure.  I was like, let’s try somewhere around here.  Seeing as though we don’t live in KC, we’d obviously find somewhere new and exciting to try.

After looking at our options around the market, we decided to give Minsky’s Pizza a try.

They didn’t have sweet tea so we went with Coke.  Whoa, I haven’t had coke in a short while.  I gave it up for the most part, pop really, but every once in a while I’ll drink Coke.  I’ll have to admit, coke and pizza are good together (like some people say beer is good with pizza, but I don’t like beer so Coke it is).

They had a large selection of food as well.  Pizzas, pastas, appetizers, a kids menu, even a gluten free menu.
