San Antonio Restaurant Guide

Spread the love

I sometimes think different people have different reasons to travel. In fact, I don’t think, I know. One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to try local cuisine. Sure there are chain restaurants you find everywhere, but I like to stick to the local favorites. I don’t always manage that. And truthfully, there are those “chain” restaurants that we don’t have close to home, so I’ll let them slide into the rada

The concierge at the hotel is a great person to ask where the locals eat. What’s their favorite restaurant? Best thing on the menu, etc. So that first night, that’s just what we did.

Rosario’s Mexican Cafe

910 S. Alamo St
San Antonio, Texas78205

I have a kid who loves Cheese Dip so of course, we had to get some. If we didn’t, she’d disown us. It’s really to the point she orders her own. Obviously, the servers always ask if it’s okay, but she orders t cheese dip.

And just a note… these are my absolute favorite chips. The ones that have a curl to them like this. In my house, we call these Mommy Chips. haha.

Chicken Enchiladas.

Mexican Meatballs. These were mine. YUM!

Cheese Enchilada with cheese sauce. Do you know who ordered this? Hint hint… the one who orders her own cheese dip.

Fajitas. It was steak, chicken, and shrimp.

Rainforest Café

110 E. Crocket Street
San Antonio, Texas 78205

Usually, our goal is to go to a restaurant that isn’t a chain restaurant. There are times though that we want to go to one we don’t have around home. Enter… Rainforest Café. I’m pretty sure the closest one to us is either 2 hours away or 2 1/2 hours away because it’s either Kansas City or Tulsa. So this is one of those we make an exception on.

I went for the Steak and shrimp. I do like shrimp as long as it isn’t the boil, peel, and eat type.

Hubby went for a steak and fish of some sort. Salmon I think. I’m not a fish person so I didn’t pay total attention… whoops.

Tbug went for the fish and chips.

Justin’s Ice Cream

245 E. Commerce St
San Antonio, TX 78205

Now if you know my little… oh wait who am I kidding… if you know my family, we love our ice cream. We were wandering around down at the Riverwalk trying to figure out where there was ice cream when one of the guys with an orange vest on asked if we were looking for something. We told him and he directed us to Justin’s Ice Cream. Heck yeah. We all got our ice cream. I got a coffee ice cream because why not.

Michelino’s

521 Riverwalk St
San Antonio, TX 78205

When we decided we were coming to Texas for vacation, I figured we’d be Tex-Mex fooded out (I made that word up), but I was pleasantly surprised. While walking around down on the Riverwalk we ran into this Italian restaurant. I love Italian. Give me the carbs, please! So I talked the gang into eating Italian one night with me.

We decided to order an appetizer. Remember, I love carbs… haha. We did the Artichoke Bake. It was Artichoke hearts, spinach, Parmesan, and cream cheese served with Crostinis. Let’s just say yum. We ran out of the crostinis but that didn’t stop us. Oh no, we just used the bread they brought. Same difference.

Bread. Good with the dipping oil or the Artichoke Bake!

Seriously, who doesn’t like Fettucini Alfredo? My husband, but that’s beside the point. He likes a combo of red and white sauce or straight red sauce. But this wasn’t his so it didn’t matter. It was the little’s dinner.

This was Ravioli con Formaggio. Cheese ravioli in a marinara sauce topped with mozzarella cheese and parm.

Angel Hair de Mare. Shrimp, scallops, and red bell peppers in a roasted garlic cream sauce. You can bet I didn’t order this. I did try it… it was very “fishy” in my opinion. And if you notice from my previous statement, it was more of a white sauce. hmmm…

Penne con Pollo E Pesto. This would have been mine. Penne pasta with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, grilled chicken in a pesto cream sauce. Holy yum! But by the time it showed up I was stuffed. That didn’t stop me though.

Oh and dessert. Yes, we did dessert, Tres Leche. I converted my whole family into liking this coffee dessert. Go me!

Saltgrass Steak House

502 Riverwalk
San Antonio, TX 78205

This was another one of those, we made an exception to eat at a chain restaurant. The closest one to us is Tulsa. It’s totally okay. And if you see a theme, we spent a lot of time on the Riverwalk. Hello, we were in San Antonio.

This bread. It’s carbacious (another made-up word I think).

But this lemonade. It’s Strawberry and Holy yum, totally worth mentioning.

And this salad. Oh. My. Goodness. Did you know a salad could actually be yum? Like noteworthy yum? It’s all in the ranch dressing I’m sure.

The rest of my gang went with soup. That meant the little tried to steal my cheese. This is Broccoli Cheddar.

This is Tortilla.

And steak. I seriously thought we’d eat a lot of Tex-Mex but we ate a lot of steaks. Yum! I love steak. Nope, not a vegetarian here. Sorry, not sorry. This was my medium-rare steak with their shaved Brussel sprouts.

The little got a pizza. She went to a steakhouse and got a pizza. The kid who loves steak. Now here is where I mention she ate off everyone else’s steak.

This is hubby’s rare steak and yes, he slathered it in butter.

This was Tbug’s rare sirloin with their Brussel Sprouts. Here’s a fun fact. When she was younger she’d eat our steak (just like the little does now). At that time hubby and I always got medium-rare. But when she started ordering her own steak, he’d have her order it medium. She always complained it wasn’t as good. I asked him one day why he did that and he was like I don’t know. I told her from now on you like your steak medium-rare. Since then she’s become a rare girl, just like her daddy.

Häagen-Dazs

214 Alamo Plaza
San Antonio, TX 78205

After dinner, we headed off to find ice cream. I’m not kidding when I say we’re an ice cream family. Hubby shared with me. The little got a chocolate shake and I got a coffee frappe and the older got a smoothy. Hubby wasn’t impressed with mine… I liked mine, however.

Hard Rock Café

111 Crockett St
San Antonio, TX 78205

We went by this place so many times during the week. Hello, this was right across the street from where the hotel bus picked us up, of course, we’d see it. It was another exception to our rule. Closest is 2 hours away.

Look at that lemonade. I got one. It was yummy. It also made me laugh since I made Strawberry Basil cupcakes. Must be the new flavor…

A guitar rail. Of course.

I got a steak. You would think I would be steaked out, but I wasn’t. It really wasn’t the best steak I’ve had… It was a New York Strip.

Tbug got a Bacon Cheeseburger and fries.

Look at that. Yum, right? I thought it looked good. This was hubby’s burger. He got the same thing as Tbug.

And guess who got the pizza.

The Republic of Texas

526 Riverwalk
San Antonio, TX 78205

Ah, the infamous cheese dip that winds up on our table. Although at the Mexican restaurants at home we usually get white cheese dip so my kid is a queso snob. She threw a fit because this was yellow.

Taste of enchiladas.

Chicken Fried Steak. This was the daughters, but yum. She did great.

Hmm… fish at a steakhouse type place… that screams hubby.

Mac and Cheese. Not mine.

And check out the base on the tables.

Mr. Ice Cream

423 E. Commerce St
San Antonio, TX 78205

Another ice cream adventure.

Chocolate/vanilla in a waffle cone. Mine!

And that monkey in the cage would randomly talk. It scared me and basically everyone who happened to walk around it. It was quite hilarious.
