Mother-in-law room

Spread the love

Yeah, we call our spare room the Mother-in-law room. The story is (if I haven’t already told you) when my parents were building their house, my grandparents helped with a lot of the work. My grandpa did all the wiring, my grandma stained wood (and we have a ton of it in their house), etc. Well, my grandpa was 11 years older than my grandma and my grandpa had been in and out of the hospital in the past years. My dad just always said that if anything ever happened to my grandpa that we’d move my grandma in with us and she could have the spare room. So he started calling it his mother-in-laws room.

So jump forward about 12-15 years, when PC and I started talking about getting married and finding a place to live, tbug said, Memaw better have a room too! Well, I’ve always thought of the spare room as my grandma’s room even though she passed away in 2007 so when we bought this house I just started calling the spare room the MIL (or mother-in-law) room. PC picked up on it and it’s been that ever since.

The best part is both our mothers have joined in and started calling it their room. So better yet, one-weekend Tbug was over and so were his mom, my mom, and my dad. Tbug said that it was my mom’s and his mom’s room and then she goes, but where will Nicky Bear [my dad] stay? We all looked at her and she said, I know he can share my room with me because he’s the King of Fun. We all got a good chuckle out of that.

So so I’ll quit rambling and proceed to show photos 🙂

Here was the room when we decided to buy the house. Remember, this is the previous owner’s stuff in here.

This was her spare room also.

Now again, you remember these photos I’ve shared through this process right… I think I’ve shared them anyway…

Memaw scraping walls for us!

My mother helped so much by hanging wallpaper.

Since we were planning on replacing the carpet, this room became the painting room. Our goal: keep it off the newly painted/papered walls! haha, carpet, well we dripped and then PC stepped on my paint lid and got red paint all over the carpet. haha! Good thing we were replacing it!!

Oddly enough, we didn’t get many pictures of this room as we were re-doing it. I think we were all in such a mad furry to get things done, especially for the 4th of July and his family to see that the camera didn’t come out much. A lot of the pictures we do have his dad took, especially from the first weekend.

The back wall in this room is concrete so wallpaper isn’t much of an option so we went to paint it this gorgeous gray color. When we did, it looked like fly tracks, just the little holes in the concrete :(. So my mom had an idea. She did it to my aunt’s bathroom and also to her wall at work. You take and crumble up tissue paper, then put some paint on the walls and then put the crumpled up tissue paper and then paint over the tissue paper. It gives it a very cool texture. Then you do a glaze with a slight color in it over it once that has all dried. Might sound complicated but it isn’t. We opted to not do the glaze though because I loved the color so much but it makes it look like leather. It was gorgeous if I do say so myself.

So here is what the MIL room looks like now…

I seriously think I’m jealous of this room. I absolutely love it!! We haven’t worked on our room yet so maybe I’ll like ours better, but this to me is Cowboy Chic! We are still looking for something to put along that short wall next to the door in the last picture but not sure what yet. A small desk or bookshelf or dresser. Nothing has completely struck our fancy just yet but we are looking!

We picked out the wallpaper before we really even knew we had the house, we just loved the wallpaper. The bottom looks like black snakeskin, the top as you can see is stripes. The border is cowboy boots.

The 2-night stands were laminate stands that looked like wood. I spray painted them black and put a coat of black paint on that.

The black bed frame was a gift. I already had the queen-sized mattresses for it. I got the bedding down in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Steinmart. (My mom loves that store, as I get older so am I… LOL.) All the pillows came with the bedding, it was a 7 in 1 deal. The curtains came from J.C. Penney. (nope neither of these stores paid me a dime to promote them, I paid them, haha) How cool is it I found them to match!

I lucked out on the carpet too. Someone I knew had leftover black carpeting and it was the right size for this room! Whew. I seriously think that is what helps make this room POP!

I painted the floor trim and door trim the same color as the back wall to help tie it all together and so it would stand out on the black.

So there you have it… my beautiful MIL room. I told PC I may go live in that room although the closet isn’t big enough for me. haha!

If you missed my kitchen, click here! The next room I’ll show you is Tbug’s room.

Peace, Love & MIL rooms!

  1. Love the cowboy boot border. I hope you don't mind me saying but the small off-centred window kind of detracts from how good everything else looks. I know you can't move it but there are ways of camoflaging things, or playing them down, or counter balancing. Good job on everything else.
