Roll-Out Sugar Cookie Tips/Tricks

Hello, happy Foodie Friday. I mentioned last week that my daughter’s birthday was in June and we did a Minnie Mouse theme. I made cake as well as cupcakes and cookies. The cupcakes and cookies were for one birthday party (at the lake, cupcakes make for easy transport and distribution) and the cake was for her other birthday party (with family at home).

I took cake decorating classes, but we never really worked with cookies. I had to do a little research on how to decorate cookies and I want to share some tips and tricks that I learned, plus my favorite recipe for making sugar cookies for decorating. I have a whole other favorite sugar cookie recipe if you aren’t decorating with icing!

Birthday Party Take 2, But 1

Is that title confusing to anyone else? Okay, I’ll explain. If there is one thing I can tell you about my baby girl it is that she is loved. She is loved by a lot of people. We got involved with our diving group in 2013 when we got certified and they are a second family! Or really, they are family. That’s the best way to describe it. And baby girl got herself one heck of a family! So her birthday was on Sunday, but that Saturday we were at the lake for the Safari Hunt. That evening, we had a small birthday party for her at the lake for those who couldn’t make her birthday party on Sunday. So this kid had 2 birthday parties, this was the first and her actual birthday date was the second. Therefore, Birthday party 1, but post 2. Did you follow all of that? If not, just know my baby girl has one heck of an awesome family both blood and personally added!

We’re a lively bunch, I tell ya! Watch out for us!

So during the Safari Hunt, she played hard. Eventually she took a nap. We got her back up to Deb and Grady’s camper without waking her up and I got her on their couch so she took about a 2 hour nap. When she woke up, I’m not sure she was ready, so she cried and cried. The only person who could console her was daddy!

Girls Cookie Day, Part 2

So the original reason the girls came over the other day was to make sugar cookies.  Sometimes it is helpful to read the directions for the cookies before they get there because after we started fixing up the cookie dough, then I saw where it had to chill in the fridge for 2 hours.  That’s why we made the Funfetti Cookies.  I say we, I really wasn’t involved other than calling out the directions.  Zebra Girl, Tbug and Moo were in charge and Tbug knows my kitchen well enough to keep things under control.

With Moo being Gluten Free, we made these cookies Moo friendly by using Oat Flour.  Holy yum!  I’m not sure I’ll want to go back to regular flour for sugar cookies!  YUM!

Tbug got a cooking set for cookies & brownies for Christmas one year.  Here’s our Gluten Free Sugar cookies

What you’ll need: 1/2 cup butter, softened; 1 cup sugar; 1 egg (so almost A friendly, she can’t have eggs); 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (eh eyeball it!); 2 cups Oat flour; 1 1/2 tsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp salt.

Christmas Cookies Traditions

When I was younger, I got in to making Christmas cookies.  I’m really not sure how it happened, but it did and that’s what matters!  I would make up my list every year on who would get cookies, I would bake them up, divvy them out and my dad would drive me around (until I got of age to drive, then I’d drive him) delivering cookies.  I chose different recipes every year.

Then about 6 years ago or so I got out of doing that, which again I don’t know why and it truly is sad.  People would go to my parents saying, “I missed Nicole’s cookies this year.”

Since I’ve been with my husband I talk about this ritual quite a bit to him and finally this year we decided we’d do this tradition again, however Tbug was going to be involved.  So that’s just what we did.  Saturday morning, she and I set out to make Christmas cookies.

We chose to make Neiman Marcus cookies & Sugar Cookies (recipe follows)
