Grilled Ham & Cheese

Back sometime around like 2005, 2006, something like that, I was at my aunt’s house looking at all her cookbooks.  Ok so she has a cookbook fetish like I do… but anyway I stumbled across Any Bitch Can Cook.  Ok so I giggled.  When you open it up, the first page says Babe In Total Control of Herself.

I just had to have that cookbook, but that’s beside the point.

The point is, that time, I opened up the cookbook and it had very simple recipes, one in particular caught my attention, Grilled Cheese.  Again I laughed.  Who doesn’t know how to make a grilled cheese?  My grandpa taught me when I was like in 3rd grade or something like that.  He taught me because he was tired of making them for me.  It was an after school snack :).

Anyway, I read the recipe and I agreed with it.  Very good :).

Now as I’ve gotten older, especially watching Friends, I’ve learned there are people who don’t know how to cook.  On friends alone Rachael wanted to boil 2 cups of salt (yuck) or on Sex and the City they used the oven for extra closet/storage space.  What’s up with that?

I know, those are TV shows, but my point is, I get that there are people out there who don’t like to cook as much as I do.  Come to my house, I’ll cook for you ;).

Anyway, I thought I’d teach you how we make Grilled Ham & Cheese at my house!

First off, you need to start with an even number of bread slices.  Most nights at our house, it is just the two of us, we eat one sandwich a piece, therefore, 4 slices of bread.  Yes, math was a strong suit of mine :).

Next you will butter one side of each slice of bread.

Once that is done, place your ham in the skillet with a little butter and a secret ingredient. I’ll share with you now what that is…. are you read? Can you handle it? It’s Season Salt. Lightly brown the ham on both sides and then pull off the stove.

Now it’s time to assemble your sandwiches. The easiest way to do this is place your buttered sides of your bread together. That way you don’t get butter all over the surface you are working on. So first layer of course is the bread. Then cheese.

Next lay your ham on the cheese and top with another slice of cheese.

Just as you are getting ready to place the sandwich butter side down in the skillet, top with your other slice of bread, butter side out.

Keep an eye and when it browns, flip the sandwich over. It’s best to do this over medium heat so the outside doesn’t burn &/or finish before the inside cheese layer melts.

Once both sides are browned, pull out, place on a plate and enjoy!

Hubby likes to eat his grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. I like mine just like this!
