Stress & the Loving Husband

Ah, I swear, I forgot how stressful being a college student can be some days.  Yesterday I went to class.  After class was over I decided to go home and study vs going to the library, partially because I was hungry and didn’t have any food with me.  So I drove home and pulled out all my homework.

  • British Literature: Finish book 2 of Paradise Lost, Some research & a media project.
  • Intro to Writing about Literature: I have 2 papers due in the next 2 weeks.  One is on A Doll House and the other is on Othello.  One paper will be a Classical critique and the other will be a feminist.  I get to choose which play gets which critique.  Plus I still want to do a rewrite on my first paper.
  • History of the English Language: I have a powerpoint presentation due in a couple weeks, a paper due at the end of the semester and a test next Friday.

Thinking about all of that just stressed me out so I thought I’d take a short power nap.  Yeah well… that didn’t work.  I was so tired I couldn’t keep my eyes open but at the same time I couldn’t get my nap in because all I could think of was all the work I needed to be working on.  Let’s just say it was an unproductive afternoon.

But I’d like to brag on my loving husband just a bit.  Earlier this week he knew that I was getting majorly stressed out so he stopped by the store and bought me these to perk me up.

I would like to report that I did finish my Paradise Lost stuff for today’s class though.  Woohoooo.  Up next… is it nap time yet?  Happy Friday.

Last First Kiss

Have you ever been driving down the road in your car, by yourself, let’s say a fairly long commute and get to thinking?  I hope it’s not just me!

Recently on my commute either to or from school (can’t remember which) I started thinking about last first kisses.  When this idea popped in to my head, I was taken back to the movie Hitch with Will Smith.  You know, the one where he is a relationship coach.

Then I got to thinking about this clip right here.

“Jiggling the keys,” postponing the inevitable leave that you know will happen at the end of the date. I’ve been on dates where I really didn’t want to kiss the guy at the end of the night and didn’t.  He just didn’t do it for me apparently.  Then I’ve been on dates where if a kiss happened, well it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world I guess.  Now one thing to know about me, that my matron of honor pointed out at my wedding, is the fact that very seldom was I ever in short term relationships.  Sometimes I was tied up in the long term even if I wasn’t really wanting to be.

Change is hard sometimes and unfortunately that’s why I think I stayed around.  I come from a fairly small town (small being a relative word here).  Funny thing about that though is only once have two guys I dated been from the same town.  I kind of steered clear of my hometown, partially to avoid the drama I guess.  You know what Miranda Lambert says, everyone knows your business in a small town.

I’ve mentioned many times that my husband and I were friends in high school, but even though he asked me on a date, we never went on one and I never kissed him.

July 25, 2009 was our first official date. I had just come out of a hard relationship and I wasn’t in the mood to date anyone at the time. In fact, the furthest thing from my mind was dating. I found hubby on facebook one night and after chatting back and forth he said we should grab a drink sometime and catch up. I hadn’t been on a first date in 5 1/2 years so to say I was a bit nervous would be a bit of an understatement.  It was a scary thought.  At that time I was involved in a group of friends who we had monthly dinners and referred to ourselves as Dinner club.

I thought this would be the most opportune time to invite him. If things didn’t work out so well, the most I’d be around him was the drive to and from dinner, otherwise, I could ditch him. What can I say, I was nervous. I might be one who tries to have a back up plan although lately I swear that isn’t even an option, but that’s beside the point of this blog post.

The point is I gave him a chance. It was a hard and scary chance, but I did it. After dinner was over and I got done dragging him to the mall (only because it was Evelyn’s idea) we went to my friend J&B’s house where I proceeded to make a memorable impression on him and then finally around 1am we decided to head home. (nice run on sentence)

So we got to his mom’s house (remember he was living in KY at the time) and I went to drop him off, but we stayed in my car and chatted for a little over an hour.  By 3am I realized if I didn’t go home, I’d be exhausted the next day so I finally said I should go.  I lingered as long as I could. For some reason, I don’t remember now, I wound up getting out of the car. Being the middle of July you wouldn’t think it would be chilly, but that night there was a nip in the air so I had my arms wrapped around myself trying to keep warm. He was standing next to me but finally wrapped his arms around me to give me more heat.

At this point I really needed to go, but I was doing what Hitch told Albert girls do, I was waiting. Holding on hoping that they’ll get their last, first kiss. What’s so funny is hubby knew my past relationship debacle and was trying to give me the space that I wanted. I kind of lost all hope for that night when he finally planted a kiss on me.

That kiss was butterfly induced, giddiness, excitedness, heart doing flip flops kind of kiss.  Funny enough, it was brief but it was enough to know this guy was different.  Obviously, I went on to marry him a little over a year later :).

So for anyone out there who has experienced that last first kiss, was it magical?  For those of you who haven’t yet, I promise there is someone out there, your Albert is waiting for you! 🙂  And not saying my husband is the Albert in this movie, but I’m also saying, never write the Albert’s off in your life, they just might be the one!

I promise, this guy here does exist!

Thursday in St. Louis

So when we woke up on Thursday, it was a cloudy, sorta rainy kind of day.  We got up and got dressed and decided to go grab breakfast at Denny’s since we knew we could get a big breakfast and not worry about lunch.

We bought tickets on line to go to Six Flags.  By buying on line, we got a discount but we had to wait 5 days to use them.  That put us up to Thursday.  Since it was raining on Thursday we were debating on if we wanted to use our tickets that day or not but finally decided after Tbug and had such great luck on my birthday with rain and amusement parks we decided to take our chances.

I can’t tell you though, I was shocked at the amount it cost to pay to park once we got to Six Flags.  Really?  I guess I’m used to Silver Dollar City (Steal your dollar city as I usually call it) because we get free parking… but whatever… we had the tickets and we didn’t want to waste that money…

While we were at Six Flags there were times when it was extremely cloudy, there were times when it was hot and sunny.  We decided we didn’t want to ride water rides since we forgot to bring dry clothes with us to change in to, however one of the rides we were on turned in to a water ride… aka it started pouring :).

Luckily we had towels in the trunk of the car so we at least had a way to be semi dry on the ride home.  That’s also the first time I’ve walked into a hotel wearing a towel as a skirt and carrying my shorts.  Hey, don’t judge, no one knew….

Since we spent part of our day dry, we decided that evening to dress up and go eat dinner at Romano’s Macaroni Grill.

I still say one of the things St. Louis is missing is the taste of sweet tea.  Seems we could only find it at fast food restaurants.  After we left Macaroni Grill, we were on the hunt for Sonic because we wanted a GREAT big Sweet Tea.  We each got a Route 44 Sweet Tea.  Luckily, the sonic was like 4 miles from our hotel.  Wow, do you see a pattern?  Everything is like 4 miles… lol.

Now ladies, I want to show you the true sign of a GREAT man.  One who when your hands are full (can’t remember what I was carrying) carries your purse for you :).  Even when people are looking at him strangely.  And apparently my hands weren’t all THAT full because I was able to snag a photo… just throwing that out there… lol.  Don’t worry, the next day he made me carry it :).

St. Louis Take 4

We were woken Wednesday morning by information that there was flooding of rivers along I-44 and around and south of Rolla the water was actually over I-44 and the interstate between St. Louis and home was actually shut down.  They were having to reroute people around the flooding, and when your major interstate is flooded, that’s…. fun!  I was wondering how we’d get home, luckily we had a few days for it to recede.

While we were watching the News and searching the internet, we decided to eat left over pizza for breakfast so once we were up and dressed, we really weren’t all that hungry, so we decided to get Cold Stone Creamery for lunch.

From there, we decided to head to the outlet mall we found while we were doing some google searches.  As we were headed down the highway we saw this interesting vehicle… Not really sure what it was but I sure would have liked to have known!

We finally made our way to the Outlet Mall which I’m happy to say it actually had outlet mall prices!  Score!

While we were there, we saw a nail place so I suggested that hubby and I get pedicures.  Come on, the main reason to get one is the foot rub!  How girly is that and NO he didn’t get his toes painted :).  haha.  I love my husband soooooo much!

Finally around 5 we decided to make our way back over to Forest Park where we were going to attend a Broadway Musical, Westside Story.  Our tickets were at Will Call.  And One cool thing about this, if I haven’t already mentioned it is, there are 1500 free tickets set aside so that everyone can attend the musical!  How sweet is that?!?!  St. Louis doesn’t want their people to say my kids aren’t “educated” because we couldn’t afford it.

We finally found rush hour traffic but still, it wasn’t totally unbearable.  Not that I’d want to drive in it every day or anything but still…

Once we got to Forest Park, we decided to turn around and go eat, then we’d come back to the theater.  It was busy and why take the time to park because once you got parked, you didn’t want to give up your parking spot.  So we left and went to eat at P.F. Changs which was about 4 miles from there and then came back.  I giggled because we wound up on this road in the park and it was bumpy as all get out.  Worst road in the city so far by far 🙂

We parked more up by the Zoo and took a nice stroll down to the Outdoor theater.

Hubby went to get our tickets while I stood out of the way trying not to get run over.  You can’t imagine how many people were there.

It is an outdoor theater… so you watch under the stars.  The theater started at 8pm.  It was a gorgeous night for an outdoor theater.

And I was entertaining myself 🙂

Then at intermission, I decided to entertain myself again.

The musical was fantastic.  If you ever get the chance to see Westside Story, I suggest you do!

Then we left and we both were having Sweet Tea withdrawals.  I’ll say, that’s the one thing we had a hard time finding in that city… Sweet Tea.  Finally I said, hey, I’ll bet McDonald’s has their famous Sweet Tea.  Sure enough, they didn’t let us down!  Whew.  It was touch and go there for a minute… lol :).

St. Louis – Part II

So Monday morning as we were checking out of the Hampton Inn, I accidentally dropped hubby’s camera.  Oh I was not happy, if you can imagine.  Luckily I just broke the battery grip, so far as I can tell.  Still not happy about that though.

We had time to kill between hotels, so we decided to head to Anheuser-Busch and see what was happening there.

Ah, the sunglasses montage.  There’s something about me and my infatuation with sunglasses, I can’t explain it!

How cute are these cookies?  You can get your own Clydesdale, but don’t worry, you’re not eating horse, it’s a sugar cookie ;). haha.

We saw that they had Beer school and it looked interesting so we decided to sign up and attend.  Now what’s funny is neither of us like beer, but still, thought it would be fun.  {by the way, it was fun}.  Beer School is about 45 minutes and is on a first come, first serve basis.  We got signed up and then it was time to wait.

While we waited for Beer School, we wandered around the Anheuser Busch museum.

Who remembers these commercials?  Spuds McKinzie

The Budweiser Frogs

Football playing Beer Bottles.  Yup, I’m actually old enough I remember all of them :).

Once they called us for Beer School, we met up with the teacher and his assistant.  There were 3 of us on this particular round.  We learned that there are Ales & Lager’s.  Lights and darks.  Also how Beer was made.

The key ingredients are Chocolate Malt, Rice, Hops {adds the bitter}, Pale Malt & Caramel Malt.  They passed all but the rice around for us to smell, because we all know what rice smells like, right :).

We came in to a chart, 4 glasses, pretzels & a souvenir bottle opener.

They poured us 4 types of Beers.  Budweiser (far right), Amber Bock, Shock Top White Wheat & Shock top Crispy Apple Wheat.

Now I learned (I knew people did this because I worked in a restaurant but I learned why) why people put salt in their beer.  It is to keep releasing carbonation.  Now, the glasses here actually had etching in the bottom which helped with that to help keep from making your beer salty.  Also they said it’s best to drink beer out of a glass because you also get a smell through your nose, so if you’re drinking out of a can, that’s why you get a bit of a metallic taste.  I don’t drink beer so I didn’t know this, but I also found it fascinating to learn :).  I must admit, I’m still definitely not crazy about beer, except in bread :).

As we were leaving beer school, our instructor gave us maps (we asked) of different local restaurants.  He said The Hill was the Italian Neighborhood and that’s where we wound up going to Favazza’s for lunch.

From there, we decided that we’d find our way to the Zoo.  We parked a few miles from the zoo actually and had a nice walk to the zoo.  On the way, we attempted doing an outfit post again.  This is definitely why I’m not a fashion blogger :).

Once we got to this small lake/pond piece of water, we sat down on a bench and had a nice long conversation just enjoying each others company.  It was great.  I’ll bet we sat there and people watched/animal watched/chatted for probably 30 minutes to an hour.  It was so peaceful.

Finally we decided to head on to the Zoo.  Now one of the awesome things is the Zoo is free.

Follow the Yellow footsteps (or the yellow brick road as I kept chanting).  Hi hubby’s rear :).  It had to make an appearance!

We stumbled across these dudes.  Sadly I’m not a zoo goer generally so I really can’t tell you what these guys are.

And the Anteater.

And a Rhino.

And my favorite, the Hippo.  Because I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.

The elephants.  Did you know elephants eat bananas?  That’s what the gal was feeding them.

After that, it was time for us to get a snack.  We got Dip-n-dots.  Sadly those things are soooo expensive but sooooo good.  It’s ok for a treat every now and again, right?  Hubby went with the banana split and I got the Oreo.

Then we headed over to where the seals & Sea Lions were.  It cracked me up because just the night before we were watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel and learning about both of their habits and how they feed while being chased by Sharks.  It was actually pretty interesting.

They were having soooo much fun showing off for everyone.

From there we headed back to the car and headed to our new hotel to check in and from there was dinner and a movie.  We went to see Grown Ups 2.  I seriously say don’t listen to the critics and watching, but that’s only if you like Adam Sandler and his types of movies!

3 Years Ago today

Marriage is like a peanut butter & jelly sandwich… the husband and wife are the peanut butter and jelly. They’re much better together than apart. God is the bread who holds it all together. When it’s done right, it’s a simple recipe that never goes out of style
                                                                                           ~Author unknown

Marriage is hard.  It’s easy, but it’s hard.  Don’t get me wrong, sooooo totally worth it, but hard and easy, but hard.

Are you confused yet?  Don’t worry, I think I am too.  Marriage is easy if you are with the right person, to work through and push on through all of your differences, all the obstacles, all the disagreements, all the everything that life is willing to throw at you.

Three Years ago today I chose to enter into this marriage.  At 10:15am my husband asked me to be his wife.  Be his wife for the rest of our lives.  Be his wife through the good times and the bad.  But most importantly, to be his wife.

When you start dating a person, you put your best foot forward.  You go out of your way to impress.  I’m not really sure you know a person until you’ve been together for a while.

We had the advantage of being friends in high school, although a lot had changed from high school until we met back up 10 years later.  Life happened.  Education happened.  Families happened.  Hardships happened.  Joyous times happened.  Heartache happened.  Jobs happened.  Enough happened to those 2 people that they had been completely reshaped, reformed and molded into the people they were on July 25, 2009, when they met up again after 10 years for their first date.  It was almost like meeting a stranger for a first date, a date that no one could have imagined would lead to a lifetime together.

My husband tells me that the night, of that first date, he knew that he was going to marry me; I however didn’t know anything of the sort.  All I knew is I went on a first date for the first time in a little over 5 1/2 years and had a fabulous time with a stranger from my past.  Who would have known that that first kiss at 3am would be my last first kiss?

As the summer drew on and I sometimes think life sped up, we became closer talking through all means possible.  In fact, we had a long distance relationship for the first 2 months of our relationship.  In October of that year (2009) when he informed me he was quitting his job and moving home, I actually got a sick feeling in my stomach.

We had talked a few times about marriage and life together but nothing was ever set in stone.  Nothing was ever serious even.  It was just talk, like we always did.  One thing I told him though, I didn’t want to ever be proposed to on my birthday, anything to do with Christmas or New Years, Valentine’s Day, basically any of the “given” times.  Turns out, I share my proposal date with National Safety Pup Awareness Day :).

I hear some many times that people are getting married but are unsure if they’re making the right decision.  If you have doubts, DON’T DO IT!  That’s one piece of advice I have for you!  When it’s right, you’ll definitely know and there will be no doubts in your mind.

So, now is time to share the story that I have shared, every year on this day:

This had started out as a pretty crappy day, I surely didn’t know that it would eventually get better! I started doing the mail and got a phone call from Nancy at the front office that I had flowers at the front desk so I headed to the front of the building to go retrieve my flowers. (I work all the way at the back.) I passed Becky grumbling that “Prince Charming’s so in trouble.” although seriously what girl doesn’t like flowers, especially when they look like this!!

Meanwhile back at my desk my mom brought Prince Charming into the building. Tracy got her camera out and Nicole got another camera that had a recorder out. Becky was standing guard in the hallway to announce to them when I got back. Then they all dove into different hiding places.

So when I came back Becky announces really loud that I had beautiful flowers. My desk has frosted glass around it and when I walked around the corner and I could see someone on the far side of my desk but I figured it was a coworker had dropped something or since I was having such a bad day, they were going to jump out and scare me (things like that happen to me from time to time) so I didn’t really think to much of it. So I came up on my mystery guest and Prince Charming is down on one knee.

I just stared at him and he asked me “The Question” and I was rendered speechless. (yes I know, this doesn’t hardly happen at all!)

I just stared at him and it dawned on me, SPEAK Nicole :)… so of course I said yes. He said he had to pry my death grip off the rose container to set them down on my desk for me; He said he thought I’d drop the flowers and he was prepared to catch them… LOL

Then he turned around and I tackled him in a bear hug.

Of course a girl has to try on the ring 🙂

Prince Charming says this is his favorite photo.

I’m officially ENGAGED!!!! I love my Prince Charming!!!

One final note:

Over time your marriage will start to look like the marriages of the people you’re around the most, so be very wise about how you choose your friends.  Look for at least one couple who has a marriage worth imitating and then be intentional about spending more time around them.

My Heart

Yesterday morning as hubby and I were getting ready to head out for the day, I looked out the front door and saw the most beautiful sky.  Well I grabbed my camera and I was on a mission to catch it with our windmill in the way :).  And this was the photo that I captured.  Hello beautiful January morning!  Only thing to make it better would be the ground covered in snow.

Wait, did I really just type that… me, the girl who loves the summer heat over the winter cold.  Yes.  Because if you’re going to make me cold, might as well enjoy some snow to go with it :).

Hubby went ahead and got in his vehicle to pull out of the driveway and as I was walking back to the house he put it in park, got out and started walking to the house.

I asked him what he forgot and he ignored me, so I asked again and he said huh?  By this time I repeated myself a third time and we were both at the front door.

His answer, “I just needed to give you my heart.”  and handed me this.

p.s. Happy Birthday to my wonderful Father-in-law!!
